October 2019 PRESS RELEASE
Well-Known American Artist Opens His First Store in Homewood
Is it a store? Is it a studio? Is it a gallery? “It’s all of those and more!” says well-known Birmingham artist Thomas Andrew Findlay, who is opening his first multi-use, activity-based art concept in downtown Homewood at 1925 29th Ave. South on December 6.
Walk into this shabby chic storefront and you will be greeted by someone at an order counter that looks much like one at your favorite restaurant. On the wall beside the counter are samples of different canvases, boards, and papers. Also, a variety of image options are displayed, all from the portfolio of this nationally acclaimed, award-winning artist. Like ordering from the menu board at Taco Mama, patrons will choose their canvas/board/paper and an image to paint or color. From flowers to animals to angels to landscapes, the images will be pre-drawn onto the canvases. The patron will purchase their preferred canvas and select an image. They will also receive a 5 x 8 postcard of the completed image that can be used as a model for their artwork. Or, patrons will be given daily access to Tom’s subscription site, ThomasAndrewArt.tv, so they can follow along a step-by-step instructional video on their phone or iPad. Tom says, “It’s for people who want to paint or color a beautiful image, yet they can’t draw the picture they would like to paint. Not being able to draw is the number one reason people are intimidated to create a painting.”
Each customer will then find a seat at “The Bar”, a high-top counter, or they can sit at a larger easel along the wall. Behind the bar, like liquor and beer bottles on shelves in a conventional restaurant/bar, bottles of different paint colors will be displayed for use. Markers, color pencils and crayons will also be available. Each patron will be served the colors they would like to use in their artwork, and all of the necessary supplies to create their artwork will be free.
“We won’t sell alcohol, but adults may bring their own cocktails during the evenings and weekends. We will have basic snack and beverage items for sale because most people like to nibble on something while their creative juices flow.”, Tom states.
Thomas Andrew Art will also have structured classes and private classes for teens and adults. Classes and events will be listed on a website so patrons can reserve their space. Each month new images will be offered so patrons are encouraged to come back to create something new. There will also be a limited amount of art supplies customers can purchase to take home.
Along with art activities, a gallery space will be created using movable walls. Some of the region’s top artists will have their artwork for sale. Moreover, in the back of the space there will be a splatter tent for patrons to splatter their old clothes, new clothes or even a canvas. "It's our Jackson Pollock area!" says Tom.
“We will also offer team building activities for groups and organizations who want to paint a mural together.” says Tom. “We plan to have many different types of activities, including a “Pictionary” night.
Lastly, if patrons choose not to take their artwork home, they can “donate” it. The artwork will then be photographed and sold on ThomasAndrewArt.com with the proceeds going to a school or charity.
